Ghana Police arrests Peaceful Anti-NATO protestors
September 23, 2011 (Mathaba) – On Wednesday 24 people of the Ghanaian “US/NATO Hands Off Libya! Hands Off Africa!” coalition were arrested and taken in police custody over peacefully demonstrating against the illegal Western invasion in Libya and for victory to Muammar Qathafi and the Libyan Jamahiriya.
The demonstration started at about 11:00 AM from Obra Spot at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra towards the United States of America Embassy at Cantonments on the 102nd birthday of Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah which is officially Founders Day (a national holiday) in Ghana.
However, when the peaceful demonstrators reached a junction near Ghana Broadcasting Corporation at Kanda, a team of police personnel from the Greater Accra Regional Police Command met them and showed a Prohibition Order from an Accra Circuit Court prohibiting the demonstration and asked them to stop.
The demonstrators refused to acknowledge the order and instead continued demonstrating against the illegal war on Libya, which made the police call for reinforcement leading to the arrest of the 24.
Those arrested were immediately brought to the Greater Accra Regional Police Headquarters to a meeting with the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), Rose Bio Atinga, who instructed that the demonstrators should be processed for court on Thursday, September 22.
DCOP Bio Atinga told Ghana News Agency (GNA) that those arrested would be charged with “acts that tend to disrupt the peace of the nation”.
She also called the demonstration illegal telling the demonstrators that there already were many activities in Accra on September 21 and asked them to reschedule the demonstration but they refused.
Although the demonstrators didn’t receive any court injunction restraining them from protesting, the police said it adequately served them the injunction.
Mr Sekou Mwanza Nkrumah, Leader of the demonstrators, who was also arrested told GNA shortly before he was detained that the action of the police showed how much influence the United States of America had over the Government in Ghana.
He expressed shock at the arrest questioning whether individual Ghanaians did not have rights and liberties to express their views anymore.
On Thursday all 24 persons have been released on bail. A Greater Accra Regional Police PRO told they were released “after caution statements were taken from them”, adding that further instructions would come from the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander.
The “US/NATO Hands Off Libya! Hands Off Africa!” coalition consists of revolutionary and progressive African organizations in Ghana who oppose the US/NATO illegal invasion of Libya and Africa and support Muammar Qathafi and the Libyan Jamahiriya to win the war against the Western imperialist military forces and NTC/Al Qaeda reactionaries.
The Ghanaian government recently recognized the NATO-led rebels as Libya’s government.
NOTE: Ghana only recognized the illegitimate National Transitional Council only to appease as there has been serious black ethnic cleansing in Libya and many Ghanians are being used as hostage. -Lady Michelle Jennifer
